Well, I have Photoshop CS5, I got an A on a Photoshop test we had in school, but I still don't feel like I'm well educated enough to make any proper images in it.

I always forget everything I know when I take longer breaks from it.

Photoshop is the only image editing program I have used, never tried gimp or anything. For me its an excellent program, especially PS CS6.

I have to agree its not easy to learn everything and it takes a lot of time. but once you learn how to use most of the tools properly etc. its like using magic it can do everything for you. and I'm still learning too, I consider my self as a big noob compared to the things other people make on DeviantArt for example.

on the bottom of the playlists you can see noob, beginner, intermediate, advanced tut, watching them all will help a lot.

I used to use GIMP then asked for Elements for my birthday since its simple to use compared to CS6, also its heck of a lot cheaper.

I mainly use PS for real life image editing, but I do like to create.
